Open Call - Group Show #50 'Roid Rage: Polaroid Photography Since Instagram

Beyond the boast of "democratizing photography" (which the Brownie Camera did more than a century ago), one of Instagram's first signatures was its square format and countless filters that nostalgically mimicked film types, flares, and early analog-only processes. Among these, its loudest nod was perhaps to Polaroid photography, in both its aesthetic and its instantaneous process.

In his recent book "The Camera Does The Rest: How Polaroid Changed Photography," Peter Buse, while providing a thorough  history, likens the Polaroid to a Sony Walkmen -- an "expired technology that lives in the past." While his claim rings true on many levels, great work has been done to bring the medium into present, and future. For example, The Impossible Project's reinvention of the film (and purchase of its factories) when Polaroid shut down production in 2008, and Land Camera/ Rare Medium's efforts to restore old Polaroid cameras and create a community around them.

So where does this leave photographers who are still making Polaroid specific work? How does "digital nativity" and seeing the world thru an app or phone-driven lens color or inform new Polaroid work. Is it possible to work within the medium without relying on nostalgia? For Humble's next open call, "Group Show #50: 'Roid Rage" we want to see Polaroid work made since 2010, the year Instagram launched.

Just Another Open Call? Announcing Humble's Monthly Instagram Group Shows

We know by now that there are an excessive amount of opportunities for getting eyes on your photography, but we're still not convinced there are enough. So, this May, we're launching a new series of group shows that will live exclusively on Instagram. But don't worry, we have no plans to halt our regular programming.

Open Call: group show #49 I Love Kanye

Folks, it was bound to happen: a Humble Arts Foundation group show devoted exclusively to Kanye West. With the release of The Life of Pablo and YEEZY Season 3, we believe the timing apropos (and too ironic to avoid). How the F do you curate a photography exhibition about one of today's most notorious pop culture icons without any images of the rapper himself?

Open Call: Group Show #48 Winter Pictures

Last year, the American Northeast experienced record snowfalls, and climate change seems to be on most of our minds. Winter can brutal, it can be beautiful, it can be a mysterious mix. For Humble Arts Foundation's first open call of 2016, we want to see your photographs representing winter - literally, abstractly, or somewhere in between. Show us your vision of a cold, cold world, and don't be afraid to get crazy. Inspired by Andy Adams' annual "Winter Pictures" calls in previous years, we're partnering with FlakPhoto, and invited Andy to co-curate this exhibition with Humble's co-founder Jon Feinstein. The group show will be featured on Humble's website and we'll feature select images on Instagram @HumbleArtsFoundation and @FlakPhoto in late February, 2016.

Also, if you didn't catch it already, the photo above is by Spanish photographer Manolo Espaliú. Visit his website, and follow him on Instagram.

Deadline:
Jan 25th, 2016

Open Call: Group Show #47: Space Jamz

NASA recently released new high-resolution photographs of Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, unveiling images its spacecraft New Horizons had uncovered at the solar system's far out regions. As we get closer to understanding worlds beyond, outer space continues to be an abstract mystery, ripe with metaphor and science fiction...and naturally, photographic interpretation. With this move into new frontiers, for Humble Arts Foundation's next online exhibition, we want to see your vision of outer space. Abstraction, appropriation, strange narratives, and if you somehow broke through the atmosphere and "documented" your travels, we'd love to see those too.

Deadline: November 15th, 2015
