A New Photography Exhibition in Jordan Shares a "Kaleidoscope" of American Identity

“I Hear America Singing,” curated by Ashley Lumb at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman, Jordan presents a wide and inclusive picture of contemporary American photography.

For 19th Century poet Walt Whitman, America was the sum of its people – an ambitious symbol of collective participation and responsibility. His 1860 poem “I Hear America Singing” celebrated democracy in its most ideal form - something the country has, for many, continuously fallen short. Taking its title from Whitman's poem, Ashley Lumb’s exhibition – the first exhibition of American photography to take place in Amman, Jordan – features the work of 16 contemporary American photographers showing the many experiences of America and American identity.

Lumb uses three themes: Landscape, Portraiture and American History to frame the exhibition. This ranges from Lucas Foglia's poetic images of rural America to Millee Tibbs folded abstractions that distort and push against the hyper-masculinity of early American Landscape photography. Highlights (but really, every image in the show eloquently articulates the puzzle of American identity) also include Wendell White's series "Schools for the Colored," which presents locations in Northeastern states that once functioned as segregated schools, digitally edited to "screen out" surrounding area, isolating them from white society.

The Reanimation of William Gedney, Over Fifty Years After the Summer of Love

A Time of Youth editor Lisa McCarty highlights the importance of preserving an artist's intention through the example of the extensive and meticulous archive of photographer William Gedney.

William Gedney was a New York street photographer who earned four major art grants including a Guggenheim and Fullbright Fellowship in the late 60s. The first of these allowed him to travel to San Francisco, settling in Haight-Ashbury right before the Summer of Love. His photographs are contemplatively personal, focusing on the intimacy between people at the time.

Through his lifetime, Gedney created many book maquettes but never received a publishing contract. One of these maquettes was developed solely from the photographs taken during his time in San Francisco. After dying of AIDS in 1989, the maquette entitled, A Time of Youth, was left to the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University, who recently published the book with the artist's intent in mind.

A Time of Youth sequences eighty-seven of over two thousand photographs Gedney took in Haight-Ashbury between October 1966 and January 1967. These photographs document the complex lives of youth at the center of 1960s counterculture. Gedney lived among them in their communal homes, photographing the intimacy of their everyday life. It’s an alternative snapshot of the San Francisco counterculture, going deeper than the surface-level, care-free depictions of 1960s flower children. Handwritten descriptions and ephemera complement Gedney’s photographs giving deeper context to his experience and work.

Artist, professor, and archivist Lisa McCarty edited and the book, reanimating Gedney's work with deep respect and homage to his original sequence and creative decisions.

Duke Archive of Documentary Arts curatorial assistant Cassandra Klos speaks with McCarty on her experience and process working through Gedney's historical archive.

A Personal Memoir From One of Photography's Sharpest Shining Advocates

Michelle Dunn Marsh, one of photography's foremost champions speaks with Humble's Jon Feinstein on her new book, her love for the medium and its makers, and why visual literacy is more important now than ever before.

I first met Michelle Dunn Marsh at a random Chelsea coffee shop in NYC around 2008 when she was Aperture Foundation’s deputy director, and co-publisher of Aperture magazine. Humble's co-founder Amani Olu and I, a year into launching our platform, were Wayne's World "we're not worthy"-ing our luck in landing a meeting with her to discuss a potential collaboration. Dunn Marsh was direct, immediately inspiring, and encouraging, and made a significant mark on many aspects of Humble's vision in the years that followed.

Fast forward to 2013 and a move to Seattle. I was lucky to collaborate on many projects with her at Photographic Center Northwest, where she served as Executive Director through 2019. Michelle brings a critical and empathetic eye to photography, and her multi-decade support of its practitioners is nearly unrivaled.

Michelle's soon-to-be-published memoir Seeing Being Seen (Minor Matters Books) chronicles her life and work as a book designer, cultural producer, and publisher. Warm personal anecdotes about her experiences in the industry and working with some of photography's late and living legends direct the narrative. Punctuated by portraits of her by Stephen Shore, Larry Fink, Sylvia Plachy, Will Wilson, and Adrain Chesser, and work from her covetable, personal photography (and vintage car!) collection, it's a glimpse of her life and career over the past 25+ years.

With a few weeks until the April 1st, 2021 deadline to achieve the book's presale goal, Dunn Marsh and I caught up to dive into the book, her life, our shared passion for photography, and kinship as fellow Bard College alums.

Famous Photographs Remade in Toilet Paper

At the end of March, with the shelter in place plan in full effect, Bay Area photographers Jenny Sampson, Colleen Mullins, Nicole White, and Christy McDonald embarked on a creative approach to self-quarantining. They started making daily homages to their favorite photographs – in toilet paper.

“Thinking about the seriousness of the moment combined with the surreal quality of what was occurring around us,” the photographers say in their statement, “we thought that we should make images to occupy our time and give us something to work on while in our homes."
