Arno Rafael Minkkinen’s 50 Year Career Photographing the Body Surreal 

Edwynn Houk Gallery’s Arno Rafael Minkkinen: Fifty Years ambitiously uses fifteen individual black-and-white photographs to encompass the entirety of the photographer’s five-decade-long career. Minkkinen’s photographs have been carefully chosen to display how he pushes the limits of the form and subject matter--not only in the use of setting and figure but also in the variation of tone and emotional response, all without including a human face. Landscape photography skeptics and agnostics may well be convinced and converted.

Brad Feuerhelm's New Photobook Navigates the Anxieties of History and Ideology

In 2017, Brad Feuehelm spent three days wandering around Berlin. He photographed various scattered symbols of capitalist modernity – billboards, television stations, satellite dishes, and contemporary office buildings – with no specific beginning or end in sight. And then he stopped.

Rather than painting a linear narrative of the city, its people or cultures, Feuerhelm cropped, collated and reorganized these often blurry, grainy black and white photographs into Dein Kampf, his disorienting 2019 photobook published by MACK that emphasizes the equally disorienting, blurry and anxious ways we navigate history and political ideology.

For Feurhelm, whether it's on the left or right, nothing is clear, everything is broken and whichever direction we turn, we confront a mess of cacophonous gray. I spoke with Feuerhelm to learn more.

Blake Andrews Photographs Life's Weird, Funny, Strange (and often snarky) Moments

In 2013 when Humble relaunched after a temporary hiatus, I invited Blake Andrews to participate in one of our first online shows on the new platform: “New Directions in Street Photography.” I was drawn to Blake’s ability to both fit within the traditional definitions of the genre (decisive moment, no manipulation, etc) yet break the tropes that have continued to hold much of the genre back. He was (and still is) just a dude capturing the ragged magic of life as it happened. In photo after photo, chance aligns to create strange fictions in every day life. The way a baby’s head cradled in its fathers arms, photographed near a toddler walking by can create and amalgamation of a species. Or how someone’s legs on a body dressed in all black walking down a street, when hit with the right beam of sun, can look like just a pair of legs walking down the street with no body at all. It’s weird, funny and strange with the right amount of snark to keep me looking.

After missing each other multiple times in real life, I got in touch with Blake over email to learn more about what drives him to make pictures.

Michelle Rogers-Pritzl's Photographs Process the Terror of Living Within a Christian Fundamentalist Marriage

Made using an antique collodion process, the artists' self-portraits reflect her experience and trauma living under the thumb of a religious cult.

Michelle Rogers-Pritzl uses self-portraiture to process her experience within, and escape from a fundamentalist Christian marriage. Borrowing from a Stevie Smith poem of the same name, Not Waving But Drowning is a collection of visual symbols for keeping up appearances within an abusive relationship, praying for change while stuck within an endless cycle of denial.

Metaphors for silencing women repeat themselves throughout the series. In some images, hands bind together, grasp at crooked arms or reach in to cover a face. In others, materials like gauze cover and restrict various parts of the body creating an uncomfortable, visceral response. It’s hard to look at them without a feeling of unease – Rogers-Pritzl packs years of emotional trauma into images that are strangely as beautiful as they are nauseating. Her use of the 19th-century Collodion process adds an additional signal to outdated ideas about women’s roles and subservience and could be interpreted as creating personal distance, pushing her experience into a reflect-able past.

After meeting the artist at Portland, Oregon’s Photolucida portfolio reviews in April, we emailed to discuss the ideas and process behind her work. She’s also included in Humble’s latest online group-show: “Loss.”

Photographing the Psychological Crush of Urban Growth

Andrew Waits photographs Seattle's evolving landscape as dark, uncomfortable footnotes.

Aporia – a term attributed to the early dialogues of Socrates – is often tied to feelings of doubt, confusion or impasse, and has been associated with meandering, unsuccessful attempts to process trauma. It's also the title of Seattle-born photographer Andrew Waits' recent series and limited edition photobook, which he uses to address the emotional gravity of his native city's rapid economic and architectural boom.

Waits' black and white photographs look at the city's shifting skeleton and its impact on the human psyche. In contrast to his earlier, more traditionally documentary style and day job as a freelance editorial photographer, Waits approaches urban development and gentrification with a brooding, poetic gaze. Buildings battle with light and shadow, foliage juts in where it can, and people, when sparsely represented, bend like branches under increasing weight. 

I corresponded with Waits to learn more about the metaphors and new directions in his work.
