18 Photographers to Follow on Instagram Before the Apocalypse

2016 has been a crazy year. From a tumultuous US presidential election, to celebrity deaths and political unrest around the world, we're ready, though somewhat scared, to move into the New Year. In these uncertain times, photography keeps us image-obsessed nerds going more than almost anything. Admittedly, aside from the onslaught of new photobooks, blogs (yes, blogging's not dead), and studio visits, Instagram continues to be one of our go-to sources for visual inspiration. So behold: 18 of our favorite photographers we've featured on our Instagram over the past few months. Do them a favor and follow them now. XOXO, and Happy New Year!

Destroying a Picture, One Regram at a Time

As a graduate student at The University of Delaware, Minneapolis-based artist Patrick Koziol drew a portrait of 19th century Naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, a contemporary of Charles Darwin, and invited his fellow students to copy it like a visual game of telephone, or perhaps a tangential riff on the classic Exquisite Corpse. With Darwin and Wallace’s evolutionary theories in mind, Koziol’s intention was to see how interpretation might evolve or distort each artist’s representation of the original image when their only source material was the previous student’s rendering. Two years later, in November, 2014 Koziol, launched a new version of the experiment on Instagram, under the alias Reregrammer, and a new project was born.

Just Another Open Call? Announcing Humble's Monthly Instagram Group Shows

We know by now that there are an excessive amount of opportunities for getting eyes on your photography, but we're still not convinced there are enough. So, this May, we're launching a new series of group shows that will live exclusively on Instagram. But don't worry, we have no plans to halt our regular programming.

10 Photographers to Follow on Instagram Before the End of the Year

As much as brands have been using Instagram to sell their products (dear readers, we KNOW you've seen McDonalds come up in your feed sometime in the past two weeks to a barrage of comments like "Get the f*ck out of my feed, Ronald!") it continues to be an invaluable tool for photographers to get their work in front of larger audiences. Whether it's a straightforward means of promoting new projects, or using the app as a sketchpad for new ideas, we're constantly in awe of the new work IG helps connect us to everyday. For more than a year, we've enlisted some of our favorite photographers to participate in week-long Instagram "residencies' taking over our feed, occasionally in wild and unexpected ways. Below (and above!) are highlights from 10 Humble Instagram residencies over the past few months. We encourage you to keep up with their work, on IG and beyond.

13 Stunningly Innovative and Revolutionarily Click-worthy Photographers to Follow on Instagram

Despite what some people might SAY they're tired of, breaking ones laurels to click away at every proclaimed top-anything lists of Instagram photographers to follow is as American as a Big Mac. If we were writing for SEO points, we might cull this into a shoddy scroll of tips (like "think outside the box..." LOL) to get more traction, but that's not really what Humble Arts Foundation is all about. Or is it? At the end of the day, our goal REALLY IS to get more eyes on photographers who deserve it, so we've continued to invite them to participate in week-long Humble Arts Foundation Instagram residencies to share their chops. Like Ben Alper who spent his residency showcasing his collection of strange vernacular imagery purchased from Ebay, or Erin O'Keefe who used her week to share some of her surprisingly un-retouched studio views.  So behold: highlights from the past 13 weeks of Instagram takeovers from some of our favorite photographers today. We encourage you to take your click one step further by following them now.
