Poetic Photographs Of Squid Ink Oozing Onto Pages of The NY Times

Tanya Marcuse’s new oversized book Ink, is a beautiful cacophony of form and symbolism.

One summer in Maine, photographer Tanya Marcuse’s son insisted they try nocturnal squid fishing. Moved by the uncanny spontaneity of the experience, Marcuse – who normally makes slow-process large format photographs – pulled out her iPhone and embarked on an unexpected series and way of seeing.

She began making similarly fleeting yet intricately crafted photos of squid spilling its ink across story titles, fashion advertisements, and marriage announcements. In each photograph, the squid, ink and newsprint become a painted, Rorschachy mess that pushes viewers to conjure their own relationships between ink and image, gesture and surface, headline and tentacle.

Marcuse’s images are both alluring and disquieting. These tableau-like still-life compositions reminds us of her background as a large-format photographer, and her iPhone brings a freeing informality to how she organizes form and space. Now a large-scale book (and limited edition folio, if you fancy) published by Fall Line Press, Ink takes on a new layer of tactility from its once digital-only existence – photos you want to hold and handle as you attempt to figure out their mystery. I spoke with Marcuse to learn more about her process and the story behind it.

Open Call: Group Show #69 – Photo for Non-Majors

Humble Arts Foundation launches an open call for self-taught photographers

Every spring, surveys of recent photography grads highlight the ones to watch in a highly competitive and rapidly evolving art market.

While these lists continue to impress us and are a wonderful and expansive curatorial resource, we're dedicating this opportunity to photographers who have pursued their work and craft independent of higher education.

This call is for the self-taught photographers. Those who learn from online tutorials and other venues outside the traditional framework and the benefits and connections it provides. Those photographers who don’t have a BFA or MFA, and have taken it upon themselves to learn outside the system. Send us your work.

Guidelines:
Submit 5 images from a single series plus a brief artist statement and bio HERE.

(please note, you’ll need a Gmail address to submit this way. If you do not have one, email us at submit@hafny.org and we’ll help you out – but we really encourage you to use Gmail.)

Deadline: August 8th, 2021.

Help This Wild Contemporary Photographic Interpretation of T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" Get Published

Gregory Eddi Jones is raising funds to publish his upcoming book Promise Land with Self Publish Be Happy and we think you should support it.

Promise Land is a 200-page, epic visual poem that reinterprets T.S. Eliot’s classic “The Waste Land” through a contemporary lens. Picking up where the poem left off nearly a century ago, Gregory Eddi Jones jacks and manipulates stock images and video stills, into unreal, sometimes cartoonish, sometimes pictorial riffs on the clichéd experiences they represent.

Chirping birds, boring cat photos, clouds, rainbows, and other dentist-office-poster images fade and break apart at varying degrees on the page, often looking like a marriage of classic impressionism and amateur “Microsoft-paint-ism”…. and that’s precisely the point.

For Jones, the cheapness of these photographic conventions and how he treats them reflect what he considers the “spiritual poverty of common cultural pictures.” En masse, they envision photography’s potential to do more than just regurgitate a simulation of these base experiences.

Photos of Public Payphones Mark Race, Class and Socioeconomic Status

Eric Kunsman’s photographs of “dated” technology – on view at Buffalo, New York’s CEPA Gallery through June 5th, convey an important public utility and its implications in the age of smartphone ubiquity.

Who uses payphones?

That was my first question when looking at Eric Kunsman’s series Felicific Calculus. Since relocating his studio from a well-heeled Rochester, NY neighborhood to one described by concerned colleagues as “a war zone” in 2017, the artist and educator has photographed public phones throughout the city in an attempt to answer that critical question.

Kunsman’s black and white compositions elegantly convey neighborhoods throughout Rochester, centering the public utility even when the phones are not at the center of the images. Some hold space in the middle and background planes, requiring us to look closely at their surroundings. As Kunsman explained in our 2020 PhotoNOLA portfolio review, payphones serve crucial social needs; connecting job seekers with potential employers, communicating with distant loved ones, and as COVID-19 blazed across the country, calling emergency services.

Kunsman’s immersive ongoing documentary project goes well beyond a time-limited installation by providing audiences with overlapping statistics including payphone use, economic status, ethnicity, age, gender, race, and crime. Laser-Cut Diaspora: In Conversation with Krista Svalbonas

Born in the United States to Baltic refugees, Krista Svalbonas’ complicated identity permeates her photography. Dual ties to Latvia and the United States, the languages she spoke growing up, and her relationship to architecture's psychological imprint on home and dislocation are the driving force behind her work.

Krista Svalbonas uses intricate techniques to reference architecture and design movements as they affect and reflect culture, struggle, and totalitarian rule. Her latest series, What Remains overlays laser-cut, traditional Baltic textile designs atop typological black and white photographs of buildings in Soviet-occupied Baltic cities. For Svalbonas, this fusion of cold structures with a nod to folk art and craft is a symbolic "counterpoint to Soviet-era architecture and the memory of its totalitarian agenda."

As conversations around cultural diaspora and displacement take center stage, Svalbonas' work is increasingly relevant and worth exploring. After having the pleasure of reviewing her work at Denver's Month of Photography Portfolio Reviews and including her in Humble's Diaspora Studies exhibition with The Curated Fridge, we caught up to discuss the many angles of her work.
