A Photographic Treasure Hunt With No End In Sight

Ross Mantle's Cryptic New Photobook Keeps Us Looking

There are often photos that elicit creative envy. The kind of photo with the punch and punctum to pull you in at first tug, but with enough grace to keep you looking and looking again. And to wish you’d taken it yourself. This photo above, with its gaping mix of absence and resolution resonates this way for me. It's one small piece of Misplaced Fortunes, Ross Mantle’s new book of photographs that feel like a magically convoluted puzzle.

Published by Sleeper Studio, Mantle’s first monograph is a meandering collection of visual clues with no clear solution. A found sculpture of a golden ear. Various references to holes - both literal and metaphoric. Anonymous gravestones leaning and waiting for repair. Bodies emerging from the woods. Faces obscured by sweatshirts or wisps of hair. Hints to treasures never to be found – riddles we might never decode.

I corresponded with Mantle to learn more about his mysterious new book.

The Poetic Fictions in Vernacular Proof Photographs

A new photobook pairs vintage watermarked “proof” photographs with prose to create stories of anonymous people.

What happens to the memories behind anonymous, discarded photos? What can we know about a person when all we have is a snapshot - discovered in an old shoebox, in a bin at some vintage store, or an archive some stranger is hocking on Ebay? What stories do we create in our minds to color the photos we find? In the case of Proof, published by emerging photobook imprint Sleeper Studio, sequencing such anonymous photographs with literary fiction can be an opportunity to provide new meaning.

Proof is a selection of vernacular proof photos from the collection of Robert E. Jackson, curated by publisher, photographer, and fellow vernacular-obsessor Ben Alper. On its own, it’s a bizarre testimonial to pre-Photoshop retouching. A nod to historical obsessions with fantasies of beauty and perfection. Red lines stretch across faces, cutting them up, scrutinizing, and suggesting “improvement.” Instructions for removing wrinkles. An opportunity to take home a memento of a major life event – a wedding or a graduation. Watermarks assuring a sale.

As images alone, Proof shows the power of images to deceive. But there’s more. The images are accompanied by texts by Edith Fikes - narrative lists and long-form tales that create new fictions for these images. Captions like: “I had my first auto accident when I wasn’t wearing my glasses. I was driving my father’s new car” and “Connie and Dean’s wedding, 1950. (Dean married Constanza and she changed her name to Connie.)” create a surreal historical memoir. It’s nostalgic but we’re not sure what for, a narrative that is as equally open-ended as it is specific.

What is Black Alchemy? A Conversation on Abstraction and Identity

For the past seven years, Aaron Turner has been making Black Alchemy. This photographic series and soon-to be-book published by Sleeper Studio uses still life, abstraction, appropriation, and occasional painting to reflect the complex historical representation of Black identity and culture.

Turner constructs sculptures and montages from photographs of historical Black figures, collections of images from Ebony Magazine, and his own family archive and re-photographs them with a 4x5 camera. His images are chaotic and filled with distortion – often as subtle codes intended for viewers to absorb, process, and attempt to decipher. Photographic paper curls, folds, and shimmers with reflection and reams of light and shadow. An image of Frederick Douglass repeats itself throughout the series – at times with softened focus, at others collaged jaggedly.

Many of Turner’s images use figures whose historical significance is important yet lesser-known. For example, “Looking at Drue King, 2018,” creates a folding montage of the 1943 yearbook photo of King, whose membership in the 1941 Harvard Glee Club sparked the desegregation of venues for college musical groups touring the South. Turner reimagines the photo as a three-dimensional object: photocopied, folded, and basked in light and shadow, giving new life to a pivotal, yet underreported figure in the history of desegregation. His process is, in a sense, an abstract shrine.

Other images devolve into full visual hallucination – they can be hard to focus on, know where to look, pulling you in while building on Turner’s interest in historical confusion. Ultimately, Turner’s gaze reforms how we understand history, the role images play in shaping it, the memories we hold to it, and the details we teach each generation forward.

There is a lot to soak through and it gets personal and layered in Turner’s family history.
