#PhotographersVote: A Photo Community Movement to Get Out The Vote

Encouraging US photographers to promote and celebrate the power of voting.

The 2020 election is critical to the United States’ future, to improving BIPOC and LGBTQ lives, responding to the climate crisis, improving global relations, and countless other issues. Voting isn’t a magic pill but it is a step toward progress.

The photo community is working together to support and encourage Americans to vote this fall and we’d love to see what voting means to you.

How it works: Use your Instagram feed to share images that tell a visual story about why you're voting in 2020, and include the hashtag #PhotographersVote #Vote2020 on your Instagram post.

Between now and the election, we, and many of the growing list of partners listed below will share images that catch our eyes on our respective IG feeds - always with credit.

Open Call: Group Show #60 – Winter Pictures 2019

It's been an ongoing tradition on FlakPhoto and Humble to share grippingly cold photos this time of year.
We want to see yours.

For Humble Arts Foundation's first open call of 2019, send us your photographs representing winter - literally, abstractly, or a "wintery mix" ( <-- see what we did?!) that's somewhere in between. Show us your vision of a cold, cold world, and don't be afraid to get layered, wild, metaphorical, or even political if the occasion arises.

We're teaming up with FlakPhoto again this year – longtime friend and photographer megaphone Andy Adams will be co-curating alongside Humble's co-founder Jon Feinstein. The group show will live on Humble's website and we'll feature select images on Instagram @HumbleArtsFoundation and @FlakPhoto in late February, 2019. (P.S. - in case you’re waiting with bated breath, Group Show #59: Numerology will go live before the new year. Stay tuned!)

Deadline: January 20, 2019

Curated by Jon Feinstein and Andy Adams

GUIDELINES: (please read carefully)

Refreshing the Map: How Andy Adams is Changing the Perception of Contemporary Midwest American Photography

Wisconsin photography exhibition highlights 10 Midwest photographers you need to know.

There's a rapidly-expiring misconception that in order to "make it" in the art and photography world, one has to live in New York City, London, Los Angeles or another dense metropolitan area. The most world-renowned museums, institutions and bluest of the blue-chip commercial galleries reside there alongside those who can afford to buy art and support artists' careers. The trope of the "art-world-hustle" is most commonly attributed to making it in New York City. In the United States specifically, with the exception of Chicago, there's often a "fly-over" attitude towards the Midwest.

For Wisconsin-born and raised producer, curator, founder of FlakPhoto and champion of all things photographic, Andy Adams, these assumptions – while first limiting – were not a problem, but an opportunity to fill a lack and make something new. Andy too, grew up thinking he'd need to make a pilgrimage to one of the coasts to find success but stayed put, using his various digitally-driven projects to build an influential community of photographers from around the world. This September, Adams narrows his focus to Midwest photographers with the exhibition at Madison Wisconsin's James Watrous Gallery aptly titled "New Midwest Photography." The show is a survey of 10 photographers living and working in Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Ohio. It's a broad range of approaches and subject matter, but what brings them all together is the photographers' blending of, in Adam's words "personal observation and regional knowledge to produce photography that reflects the contemporary American Midwest."

The exhibition opens September 7th and is on view through October 28.

I emailed Andy to learn more about what's fueling this exhibition and his larger curatorial practice.

Open Call: Group Show #48 Winter Pictures

Last year, the American Northeast experienced record snowfalls, and climate change seems to be on most of our minds. Winter can brutal, it can be beautiful, it can be a mysterious mix. For Humble Arts Foundation's first open call of 2016, we want to see your photographs representing winter - literally, abstractly, or somewhere in between. Show us your vision of a cold, cold world, and don't be afraid to get crazy. Inspired by Andy Adams' annual "Winter Pictures" calls in previous years, we're partnering with FlakPhoto, and invited Andy to co-curate this exhibition with Humble's co-founder Jon Feinstein. The group show will be featured on Humble's website and we'll feature select images on Instagram @HumbleArtsFoundation and @FlakPhoto in late February, 2016.

Also, if you didn't catch it already, the photo above is by Spanish photographer Manolo Espaliú. Visit his website, and follow him on Instagram.
