Two Open Calls: On Death (the book!) and Group Show #62: 100% Fun

Humble announces two (radically unrelated) summer open calls: one book and our next online group show.

1) On Death: the book. In partnership with Kris Graves Projects

Following last year's online group show On Death and our latest online group show Loss, Kris Graves invited Humble to team up for a sequel: On Death, the book – set to publish later this year.

What’s it about?
Death has a rich place in the photo history. For critics and philosophers including the late Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes, the medium itself was “a kind of death," or as Sontag put it in On Photography, a "memento-mori that enables participation in another's mortality, vulnerability, mutability." Sure, Sontag and Barthes' wisdom is decades old, but we continue to see it transcending time and shifting attitudes towards the medium.

The book will present contemporary photographic takes on the end of life, not only as it passes, but in the sometimes abstract metaphors entangled in the practice – how time and life arrest within a frame. Submissions are open to anyone, including those who were featured in either prior exhibition.

Deadline: June 15th, 2019

Curated + edited by Kris Graves, Roula Seikaly, and Jon Feinstein

Submission Fee: $10
(yes, as fellow artists, we understand submission fees can be frustrating, but this one’s fairly low. Consider it buying us a beer or a few slices of pizza towards the production costs of a really stellar book. We appreciate your understanding.)

Click here to submit! (note — this submission is hosted thru a new service called Picter, which requires you to create a login to submit. It’s quick, easy, and worth a minute)

2) Group Show #62: 100% FUN

Our summer online open call is a bit more….fun.

As photographers, we often take our work so and ideas so seriously – agonizing over artist statements and whether the world will accurately get our every intention – that we forget that sometimes, photographs can just be fun.

100% Fun (titled with an elbow to Matthew Sweet’s 90's hit album), hopes to break that down.
Send us photos that make us smile, laugh, or are just plain rad.
An escape from the wild, heavy world that’s dividing us and weighing us down.

Let’s get fun.

Deadline: June 20th, 2019

GUIDELINES: (please read carefully.)

1. Please submit your 50-75 word bio and other information via THIS FORM.

2. Email up to five (5) JPGs at 1,200 pixels on the longest side to submit@hafny.org with
"100 Percent Fun Submission" in the subject line and each image titled with your name and the title of the image (i.e. Andy_Warhol_Banana_01)

IMPORTANT: Please do NOT submit zipped folders, WeTransfer links or links to google drive images.
Most emails accounts these days can handle 5 jpegs at 1200 pixels wide.

ALSO IMPORTANT: Please do NOT watermark your images. We promise you, if we use them, we will give you proper attribution, but we cannot take your submissions seriously if you don't trust us.

OPTIONAL:

Want quicker visibility on your submissions? AFTER submitting via email, tag #HAF100FUN and @humbleartsfoundation on Instagram.

FEE: None – this is an online show! (also, don't call it a "contest" or "competition." It's a FUN OPPORTUNITY, folks . Smiles all around. )

Humble’s Jon Feinstein will select images to feature in HAFNY's online Group Show #62: 100% Fun, which will go live on Humble's website in July or August 2019, and potentially be shared on Humble's Instagram. We will announce selected photographers via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram feed and through our mailing list.
