One of our New Year's resolutions was to devote more energy towards helping photographers get their projects funded. We haven't done the best job yet, but we're trying. This week, the following 5 projects caught our eye and their deadlines are rapidly approaching. Some have already reached their goals, but are so remarkable, we couldn't take them off this list. Check 'em out and forego that extra round of drinks this weekend to help these projects get off the ground.
Eirik Johnson: Pine Deadline: August 6th
For the past few years, Seattle-based photographer Eirik Johnson has been making hypnotic, large-format photographs of tree carvings illuminated by sparklers and ambient light. His photographs are tender, musical and loaded with just the right amount of teen angst. To be published by Minor Matters Books in the fall, Pine will come with a 10" record with tracks by Sassy Black, Tenderfoot, Dede, Whiting Tennis, NEWAXEEYES and Johnson himself.

Zhou HanShun: Frenetic City Deadline: August 25th
From the photographer's Kickstarter page: "Frenetic City is the culmination of photographs from 2014 to 2017, created in the streets of Hong Kong. With a population of over 7 million but less than 25% of its land developed, it is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. When I first landed, I was immediately confronted by a society that is in fierce competition for physical and mental space. I decided to capture and re-create the tension and chaos that I experienced in photographic form, using multiple exposures on B&W negatives. The resulting photographs are not of a singular moment in time, but a multitude of moments captured in a single frame.
Ellie Ramsden: Too Many Man - The Women of Grime Deadline: July 29th
From the photographer: "I started this project in Spring 2017 and have since photographed and interviewed 20+ women in the grime scene, including artists, DJs, radio presenters, producers, videographers, and musicians. Grime is a hugely male-dominated scene, with women being much less visible than men, often struggling to get the exposure and recognition they deserve. This book aims to celebrate these women and their talents and to give them a platform to share their experiences.
Drew Nikonowicz 3D printed 4x5 camera Deadline: August 5th
Holy Sh*t. Talk about "disrupting" large format photography. For the past few years, photographer Drew Nikonowicz has been designing a simple 4x5 that focuses on the features photographers need most. It is affordable, lightweight, and durable, without sacrificing the rigidity and movements you might expect from a large format camera. And we hear it *might* fit in a backpack.
Romke Hoogwaerts: Vreugdevuur Scheveningen Deadline: August 25th.
From the Kickstarter: Vreugdevuur Scheveningen is a deep dive into a working-class story of epic proportions, photographed and filmed by Romke Hoogwaerts. Every New Year’s Eve in Holland, two neighborhoods build rivaling bonfires on the beaches of the The Hague. These days they are the biggest in the world. Published by Gnomic Book, this 164 page soft cover book with 90 duotone plates takes inspiration from photo essay books from the sixties but with a contemporary perspective. If funded, this will be Gnomic's 5th project, scheduled for release in September 2018.
