A Photographer Contemplates Her Family's Cross-Cultural History "In The Midst of Nostalgia"

Austin, Texas -based photographer Chantal Lesley’s latest project En Medio de la Nostalgia presents a fractured story and asks the question: “What defines a person’s identity when many cultures are involved?”

Chantal Lesley uses self-portraits, staged images, and manipulated family photographs to look at the many layers of family and cultural history. “Is there one that dominates above the rest,” she asks, “or can they all live within someone harmoniously?”

In the project's title photograph "In the Midst of My Nostalgia," for example, Lesley casts herself as the figure in Andrew Wyeth's famous painting "Christina's World," which depicts his polio-stricken neighbor on a Maine landscape - struggling with dignity despite her condition. Where Wyeth's intention was to "do justice to her extraordinary conquest for life," Lesley inserts her own struggle for hope. In place of Wyeth's dreamy field and romantic Maine barn, she casts herself looking at a border wall.

This is just one of many images that create a piecemeal narrative to reflect this in-between state. Each image ultimately ponders the evaporation of ethnic roots can create an isolating and confused sense of self.

I spoke with the artist to learn more about how her process attempts to make sense of this journey.

Have You Ever Seen a Subversive Seascape?

Photographer Kadiya Qasem finds tension and hidden meaning in crashing waves and other symbols of aesthetic beauty.

Waves , sunsets, flowers, and clouds are among the most over-photographed subjects. It's easy to scroll past them on Instagram without a second thought. Yet, something about Kadiya Qasem’s work commands an uncomfortable pause.

Qasem's warm-toned waves are alluring but disconcerting. In looking at them, our gaze becomes the conduit through which uninvited visual fantasies are projected. Qasem turns these perennial visual clichés into poetic universal symbols, inviting viewers to reconsider what they see as desirable. The Allure of Otherness pairs photos of pastel clouds against beach landscapes and fog-soaked trees, positioning them as romanticized or exotic emblems.

For Qasem, a British Yemeni Greek photographer, they are stand-ins for how it feels to be a cultural other, and how that can impact an individual's identity. Her two-part Waves series adds a layer to this conversation, casting the ocean as a sign of resistance amidst global turmoil and the climate crisis. "If the sea could speak up," Qasem writes, "what would she say?"

In Horse Scapes, Qasem photographs horses at arm's length, often with her hand gently resting on their backs, abstracting their bodies into landscapes. A power dynamic is implied but, like all of her work, the relationship remains mysterious.

Adama Delphine Fawundu Uses Photography, Hair, Shells and Other Ephemera to Map Her Cultural Identity

Adama Delphine Fawundu’s exhibition Sacred Star of Isis & Other Stories, on view at San Francisco’s Museum of the African Diaspora through November 15, probes the tensions that shape her personal and creative life. Raised with both her parents Mende and western cultural and spiritual values, her current project teases out how identity is shaped against complex and often distorted historical narratives.
