The Scraggly Poetic Life of Los Angeles Trees

Virginia Wilcox's new book Arboreal, published by Deadbeat Club shows a sinewed relationship between Los Angeles trees and the sprawling landscape they inhabit.

Spidery branches look over and onto highways, pointing and wrapping like withered fingers. Their power is in the space around them, their conversation with the land, the occasional person sitting for a portrait, or the built human presence for which they continue to make space.

“These images present a survey of trees inhabiting a mangled urban landscape that looks something like wilderness,” writes Wilcox. The work does more than simply note urban development's impact on nature - it portrays a melancholic meditation on coexistence. A mirror leans against a palm tree reflecting bramble and sky behind it; a stand of baron trunks mimics a distant downtown skyline; a pathway stretches to reveal an anonymous figure on a park bench who almost disappears in their knotty camouflage.

As a collection of images, Arboreal is a quest for coexistence in an increasingly hostile world, and Wilcox’s soft, wistful way of seeing creates entry points from many angles.

I spoke with Wilcox to learn more about the book and her life within it.

Colorful Talismans for Desire and Healing: New Photographs by Kristina Knipe

A tattooed, shirtless man lies in the back of an old car, his body draped over its dirty seats, covered in flowers, light spilling over his face and onto his hands. He looks into the lens, to viewers for connection, trust, or even a simple nod. A fallen chandelier sits on a wood floor - its glass crystals scatter in front of half-open bedroom doors decorated with a horseshoe – a failed good luck charm. A broken ankle, photographed next to its royal blue cast becomes a lifeless still life amidst glasses, flower petals, molding bananas, and a mysterious red powder.

Throughout Kristina Knipe's ongoing series "Talisman," photographed over the past few years within her community in New Orleans, people and objects flow in and out of various frames as signs and symbols of pain, yearning, hope, mortality, and the space between. Knipe constructs and photographs various environments - largely people’s homes and other personal spaces to better understand her own identity, her relationship to ritual and symbolism, her experience living in New Orleans, and as a means of deep collaboration.

After visiting Knipe’s New Orleans studio last December when I was in town for PhotoNola, we caught up to discuss the color, magic, and deep metaphors in her work.

Unto Dust: Twenty Years of Ash Wednesday Street Portraits

If you've been in New York City on Ash Wednesday, you've likely spotted someone with a cross-shaped smudge of ash on their forehead. For some secular individuals, it's a strange sight that turns heads in confusion. Many know little about this religious practice, which marks the first day of Lent in Western Christianity, beyond what they see on the surface. 

On Ash Wednesday for the past twenty years, Greg Miller has carried his hulking 8x10 film camera throughout New York City to make street portraits of those who participate in this ritual. In some images, subjects look directly back at the viewer, confronting our inquiry head-on. In others, people pause and gaze off - sunlight or shadows drench them with metaphor.

Tabitha Soren Freezes the Smudges of Image Overload

Three years ago, while on a redeye flight, '90s news reporter-turned photographer Tabitha Soren was reading a PDF on her iPad to pass the time.  By the fourth chapter, the lamp above her seat was her only source of light, and at a certain angle she noticed it illuminating strange lines across the screen. As she continued reading, these lines grew into convoluted, gestural smudges – her fingerprints abstracted from continuous scrolling as she repeated the same motions over and over again. “At the end of the fourth chapter,” says Soren, “they had accumulated enough that I almost wiped the screen clean of them so I could read more easily, but before I did that I noticed how beautiful the marks were.” And thus began Surface Tension, a series of photographs that pulls apart the many layered ways people consume and engage with images online.
