How Assembly Is Helping Art Photographers Get Their Worth

Assembly’s innovative new platform and business model helps photographers navigate the complex and evolving world of art and commerce.

Ashlyn Davis Burns and Shane Lavalette are known as dedicated, artist-focused members of the photo community through their work with Houston Center for Photography and Light Work respectively. In 2020, as the COVID pandemic forced us to reconsider where and how we work, the duo left their institutional positions to found Assembly.

Operating virtually as an art agency, gallery, and creative studio, and with minimal physical overhead, Davis Burns and Lavalette are determined to support their clients in all the various roles they occupy, not simply as makers in a ravenous capitalist market.

I spoke with Lavalette and Burns about their exciting vision.

Shane Lavalette Photographs What the South Sounds Like

Since 1996 The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia has invited photographers like Sally Mann, Alec Soth, Emmett Gowin and Richard Misrach to participate in their ongoing documentary series Picturing the South. The initiative prompts photographers to break from the regions potential visual clichés, in favor of a more open-ended approach. In his new book, One Sun, One Shadow, 2012 invitee Shane Lavalette focuses on the rich history of Southern music with an eye that strays from traditional documentary tropes.

There are no photographs of guitar players’ aging hands, nor are there caricatured images of Deliverance-style banjo players plucking away on back porches. Less than five of the photographs in the book include instruments or literal signifiers of music. Instead, the series reflects the ambiance of music and its rich sensation through landscape, portraits, still life. “I knew immediately I didn’t want to set out to illustrate significant places and people that are part of the musical history of the South, or directly trace any specific lineage,” says Lavalette. “I wanted to explore the subjects on the fringes of these places and focus on the atmosphere.”

9 Photographers Richard Prince Has Not Yet Appropriated From Instagram

We're not entirely certain whether Richard Prince's latest appropriation exercise is as radical or groundbreaking as his earlier work, or whether it's worth all the "you mad, bro?" kerfuffle as it's recently ignited among the Facebook-commenting i-literati (we prefer Sean Fader's much smarter approach late last year), though we realize he's probably having the last $100,000 laugh. But we're somewhat certain that Instagram was a one-off opportunity, and he'll quickly move on to another medium of appropriation. So these 9 photographers who generously participated in Humble's Instagram residencies over the past two months are hopefully safe. You can catch more of their inspiring work, which ranges from Shane Lavalette's use of the application as a sketchbook for future projects, to Roxana Azar and Anastasia Samoylova's experimentation with in-phone manipulation tools, by clicking thru their photos in this post.

12 Magical Buzzwords Photography Blog Writers Need to Stop Using

Click-bait continues to be one of the emptiest forms of online pseudo-journalism. Easy headlines full of hollow adjectives goad readers to spend their attention on an endless cycle of content. While these words often lead to thoughtful material, they can pull us down a rabbit hole of a story that has little to do with its syrupy headline. This "and you'll never guess what happened next" form of new literature extends to art and photography journalism, and its motives are pretty transparent, but somehow we keep clicking, and here at Humble, are often guilty of using them ourselves. So we asked some of our favorite photography writers, curators, editors, historians and educators to dish out their most beloved click-bait pet peeves, which we illustrated with some of our favorite stock images of cats.
