Open Call: Group Show 61 – Loss

Loss is a universal experience that transcends class, culture, age, and history. We all deal with it at some point in life, whether it's the death of a loved one, a breakup, or an indescribable feeling of lack or emptiness. It can also go beyond straightforward representation and into the degradation of images as a metaphor for personal loss or something more abstract.

For Humble's next online exhibition, as a followup to our 2018 show "On Death," we're partnering with photographer, writer, and founder of the Too Tired Project Tara Wray to curate an exhibition about these many forms of loss. Think wide, wild, metaphoric and introspective.

As an added "bonus" at least one submission will be considered for Tara Wray's Too Tired Project book, to be published by Yoffy Press in 2020.

Deadline: March 20th, 2019

Open Call – Group Show #59: Numerology

Numerology is a belief in the spiritual or mystical relationship between numbers and coinciding events. It’s also the study of the numerical value of letters in words, names and ideas, and can have astrological and paranormal implications.

In a culture increasingly obsessed with data and quantification, numerology takes on new meaning and possibility. For Humble’s final online exhibition of 2018, we’d love to see your photos dealing with numbers and their limitless metaphorical tangents.

Deadline: November 20, 2018
Curated by Jon Feinstein and Roula Seikaly

Open Call - Group Show #54: Seeing Sound

By now you may have seen wizard artist Neil Harbisson's super-viral 2012 TED Talk, demonstrating technology that allows him to "hear" color. Or maybe you're a fan of Design Observer and attended their pivotal "What Design Sounds Like" symposium in New York City in 2015. Or perhaps you marveled at Aperture's Fall 2016 Issue "Sounds," which explored the impact of music on photography. The interest in the intersection of the senses has drawn fascinating work across a range of creative media for years.

But more abstractly, is it possible to make a photograph of what we hear?
What are some photographic representations of riffs, repetition and tone?
How might an image have a verse and refrain?

For Humble's next open call, we're interested in seeing how photographers represent sound, music, any kind of audio frequencies in their work, with three major caveats:
No band photos. No live music photos. No photos of musical instruments. Let us see sound as we'd least expect it.

DEADLINE:
August 15th, 2017
