Abstract Vintage Snapshots of the Statue of Liberty: a Metaphor for Fading Freedom

We live in a time of political fragmentation and discord where cherished institutions seem under attack. America’s identity appears to be one of polarization, with a lack of common values to draw the country together. How does one define individual liberty during these times? What does the Statue of Liberty, which once inspired and beckoned individuals from around the world, mean to us on this celebratory Fourth of July?

It is an era of many questions and few answers. These snapshots of the statue from my collection are like shards of a mirror whereby the whole is elusive. They are abstractions which seem ghostly; a mirage thru which we are attempting and hoping to achieve some clearer vision of a brighter future for this nation. Photography can help elicit memories of better times, creating a nostalgia for what seems lost or missing and a hope for what will be. Patriotism isn’t an abstraction like these images. It is what this holiday is all about.

Vernacular Patriotism: Photographs from the Collection of Robert E. Jackson

It used to be easy to be patriotic. Now in this irony-laced age with its pervading sense of fatalism, apathy and cynicism, "love of country" seems passé or old-fashioned.  While patriotism today is often solely equated with a love of guns and the freedom to bear arms, it should be more than that.  It should be about pride in the values that this country claimed to be founded on, not prejudicial nationalism and the closing of our borders and isolationism.  We must be able to live among a mix of cultures, races and religions if our country is to survive as a great nation.  Respect and love and the ability to listen to different viewpoints is an important goal for all of us citizens to aspire to.  I hope these photos from my collection give a brief, optimistic pause during this patriotic holiday and show a positive and somewhat humorous side to patriotism.

12 Arbitrary and Sorta Bizarre Vintage July 4th Photos from The Library of Congress

For our own gesture of photo historical patriotism, we culled some completely random vintage photographs of independence day happenings from the Library of Congress' online photo archives. Many of these are from the Farm Security Administration, others are author-unknown, but all represent our continued obsessive meanderings of online rabbit-holing. Happy 4th, from Humble Arts Foundation.
