The photographic series Screens, and video series Screenings, record forms made from privacy film for windows. All imagery is captured in natural light as it filters through a skylight overhead.
I am intrigued by the physical qualities and capacities of the material: this common thing normally flattened and seen through, in my hands is made visible as a full, material and substantive body. This thing, intended to protect interiors from light and to keep private things private, its skin folded and mirroring outward is at the same time permeable to light and affected by movement in the space around it.
Screening III
Screening III is in mesmerizing flux, its movement a response to fans blowing nearby. The subtle twirl reflects the space just outside the frame of view; every shift in color and reflection a record of its environment. As time unfolds, you'll notice dramatic shifts in ambient light as clouds pass overhead.
Jennifer Brandon works with the slightest of things made with the smallest of gestures. Screens are wondrous forms made from a privacy film that protects us from light and prying eyes. Its thin surface is made visible as a substantive form available for our scrutinizing eyes.
