WTF, NFT? How The Business Model People Love to Hate is Putting More Money in Photographers Pockets Than Ever Imagined

We speak with photographer, curator, publisher and now NFT leader Kris Graves about how his new platform Quantum Art is helping artists make a living.

While many naysayers (including Wikipedia!) are convinced that the NFT market is a form of “the emperor’s new clothes,” for many artists, it’s creating new revenue streams that were previously unheard of.

At the forefront of NFT photo sales is Quantum Art, a platform led by Kris Graves, Jonas Lamis, and founder Justin Aversano (with curatorial leadership from Humble’s Roula Seikaly) who are on a mission to put money in the hands of artists who have too often seen their work used for "exposure" rather than money in their pockets.

All of Quantum's “Season 1 and 2” artist drops have sold out in twenty minutes or less, earning the artists five-figure incomes (or more!) that are deposited immediately to their virtual wallets.

I spoke with Kris Graves over Zoom to learn more about Quantum Art, the mystery behind NFTs, and how to harness this new product to help artists everywhere.

Lindsay Metivier: Archiving the Ordinary

Lindsay Metivier finds soul in fleeting moments.

For the past few years, North Carolina-by-way-of-Boston-based Metivier has gathered her often random-seeming photos into an archive of quiet musings. On the surface, they might appear unrelated, but there’s a strange specificity to her chaotic eye.

Cheap drinks in clear plastic cups beside a chlorine-green swimming pool. An obtuse circular imprint in a concrete slab. A blue paper card that reads “crisis” – found, or intentionally placed on a patch of grass (it’s unclear, and that’s fine.) A barrage of sometimes fresh, sometimes moldy sun-soaked oranges and orange peels obsessively collected and sent to the artist from friends near and far. These pictures gather details from daily life and celebrate the charge below their arbitrary surface.

Following her thesis exhibition earlier this year, I reached out to learn what brings her work together.

Who Cares "What is a Photograph?" Charlie Rubin Makes Great Art

The past five years have demonstrated an increased attention to process-based photography. Often-coined “The New Formalism,” this work has received both salivating acclaim and hate-heavy criticism for its test of photographic material, asking a nearly recycled question: “What is a photograph?”  New York-based artist Charlie Rubin’s constantly evolving work unapologetically removes this from the conversation and age-old photography ghetto with thoughtful photo-based images that speak to a more open and inclusive approach of making and looking at art.
