Humble Arts Foundation is pleased to present a joint exhibition of work by artists Ann Woo and Joy Drury Cox shown within NADA Art Fair 2009. Together, the work of Woo and Cox challenges the commonly held assumption that aesthetically sparse work falters to recount intensely complex and meaningful narratives. Calculatingly minimal, Woo’s serene gradient prints and Cox’s monochromatic drawings shy away from representational content, reimagining relationships between figure and ground. Common to much minimal work, both artists visually and conceptually strip down phenomena to skeletal remnants. Whereas Woo calls into question the authority of the photograph in perceiving reality, Cox challenges the ascription of value to various types of labor. The work of both artists, appearing aesthetically void, opens space initiating valuable reconsiderations of human experience often left unexamined. – Karen Archey
