Humble Arts Foundation is pleased to present Manual Transmission, a project that commissions 10 artists to make a unique slide-based artwork. Each artist will create a piece comprised of 36 exposures from one roll of 35mm color slide film. We will present the project simultaneously on one of 10 screens during a one-night rooftop slide show exhibition. Humble will supply each artist with one roll of film, and selected artists will have one month to complete their project before retuning the undeveloped roll to Humble for processing and presentation. All exposures will be shown.

Concept
It goes without saying that photography is viewed and created with an ever increasing reliance on digital media and technology. Blogs and online exhibitions have enabled a viewing culture of isolated people flipping through single images. This digital viewing experience provides a multitude of benefits for photographers and viewers alike. On the other hand, the digital experience of photography has, in some ways, cheapened the object quality and permanence of the photograph.

There is still great potential in the unique aesthetics and collective experience of the traditional analog slide show. With Manual Transmission, Humble presents each carousel as an individual artwork in an attempt to move the creation and dissemination of new photography out of a digital space into a more permanent one, even if only for one night.
