Photo Book of the Week: Réponse Floue

Jérémie Egry – Réponse Floue
Morava Books, 2010
Edition of 100
ISBN: 978-83-926924-4-7

This new book by Morava features work by Jérémie Egry. I really like the way the publication is designed (Jérémie designed it himself), there is a lot of room for the images to float around the pages and breathe. The simplicity of this book is quite nice; it is printed and sequenced in a way that fits Jérémie’s work and aesthetic very well. I’m really looking forward to what Morava publishes in the future.

Photo Book of the Week – Felsgarten

Jessica Hans – Felsgarten
Self Published, 2010
Edition of 100

I just received this in the mail from Jessica and am really impressed by the quality of this book. She always has very well-made objects; the binding, design, and printing all work nicely for this publication. The images in the book are from her rock collection and were made on the coast of Maine. The pacing and editing work well in a way to break up the imagery and insert pauses between similar images.

Photo Book of the Week – Myriorama

Estelle Hanania – Myriorama
Published on the occasion of the exhibition Myriorama at FAT Galerie in Paris, France by Gottlund Verlag
2010, edition of 300
ISBN: 978-0-9816855-7-1

I was really happy to see that Estelle Hanania was finally publishing a book as her work has been some of my favorite for a while, and even better that it was being published by Gottlund. The work in this book feels really genuine and original. Her work has a bit of a documentary feel, but the subject matter and handling of the imagery gets rid of the overbearing notion of this being a strict documentary photo-essay. The letterpress cover and binding are really nice, too.

Photo Book of the Week – Call & Response

Terence Hannum & Scott Treleaven – Call & Response
Self-Published, edition of 200, 2010

This past Saturday, Scott Treleaven had a screening of some of his videos at Light Industry. In addition to his videos, the drone metal band Locrian (of which Terence Hannum is part of) played along to his final video and continued for a while afterward. Terence and Scott collaborated on this zine as a sort of accompaniment to this event. The collaborative aspect of this zine reminds me of one of Terence’s past zines, Cataract of Fire & Blood, which he collaborated with Elijah Burgher on. Their work goes really well together, drawing on different ideas of the occult and metal and changing how one views their work due to the comparisons being made.

I’ve posted a couple videos from an older performance by Locrian below.

Photo Book of the Week – Queen Ann. P.S. Belly cut off

Mariken Wessels – Queen Ann. P.S. Belly cut off
Published by Alauda Publications, 2010
ISBN: 978-90-815314-1-2

I got Mariken Wessel’s new book a couple of weeks ago and have been looking through it quite a bit since then. It is a great follow up to her last book, Elisabeth – I want to eat. It is a similar format in that is consists of found images mostly depicting the same subject, laid out in a way that produces a subtle narrative. Also reminiscent of the loose vellum sheets in her last book, this one comes with a glassine envelope of a few photographs. The photographs are reproductions of found images, but it is still a nice experience to have the comparison of a more physical object paired with the work in book. After seeing both of these books by Mariken, I’m really excited to see what will come next.
